Put Your Ears On!

As a child, my teachers would often remind us to "Put our ears on!". Usually this meant they desired us to take special notice of what is being said and desiring us to pay attention. I am afraid to confess - it didn't always work.

Now a days, it seems the term "put your ears on" references something totally different. I am beginning to believe there is an new appendage associated with people. Yep, headphones or earphones seem to be a necessary part of life. It reminds me of when there was a switchover from stationary phones to cell phones. It is uncommon to see people NOT utilizing their cell phones in a constant contact mode.

As I watched an influencer, I noticed they sported their cute little color-schemed headphones and their matching microphone. Which when it comes to your Brand kit, this can be important, but, It caused me to consider headphones in another way.

As followers of Christ, do we have headphones (earphones) connected to the God of the universe or are we allowing ourselves the opportunity of being selective as to what we are listening to?

We are all aware of the utilization of these extra appendages to establish boundaries. Such as "don't bother me" or "yep, not interested.". It provides us with controlled environments and a separation from people we do not desire to interact with. I am guilty, I must admit!

These tools allow us to focus in on one sound and cancelling out another.

Question is which sound are you cancelling out?

Are you cancelling the earthly sound or the heavenly sound? Are you allowing a merging of the two - neither one carrying the weight of listening to only it? Or are you allowing your spiritual ears to be focused totally on the words of heaven?

God wants to talk to you everyday, every moment, everywhere.

Yes, he still talks! His character is constant and does not change. He speaks through the scriptures, he speaks through Holy Spirit operating in your life, He speaks through all his creation to all his creation.

At the beginning of humanity - he established his desire to walk and talk with us. Part of the fulfillment of Christ giving himself for us, is restoration to right relationship with God. This includes his communication with him. Our communion with him. He does speak - but are you listening?

He wants you to hear him. He never changes and he abides in us. Therefore, we reflect him in our actions and our words. He not only speaks - he listens.

  • John 10:27-28, NIV: My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.

  • Exodus 33:11a, NIV: The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend.

David speaks from a place of experience.

Psalm 116:2 "Because He has inclined His ear to me,

Therefore I shall call upon Him as long as I live.

Those who know him, listen and obey.

  • Mark 4:22-24 22 For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open. 23 If anyone has ears to hear, let them hear.” 24 “Consider carefully what you hear,” he continued. “With the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and even more.

With the measure you use, it will be measured to you!

The more we listen and obey, the more he will release to us. We show ourselves trustworthy and hungry for more of him when we put action to what we have heard.

The measure you willingly listen and do, determines the level you continually receive.

Listening is an active engagement in what is heard. It requires a connection with the brain and application of the spirit. It creates a fully focused and comprehension of what is heard.

  • Hearing is a passive physical opportunity requiring a decision to listen and apply.

  • Hearing, but not listening brings destruction, trials, tests and open doors for temptations.

Are you open to hearing (listening) and responding to His voice, or are you 'cancelling' his words by hearing but not doing?

The more you hear, listen and obey his words, the more you will know his will.

His voice reveals his character, personality, power, purpose, the hidden things of heaven and His voice reveals His direction for you. We see it echoed in the words of scripture and the guidance of Holy Spirit.

  • Jeremiah 33:3. Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.

  • Isaiah 30:21 And you ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, this the way, walk in it, when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.

  • Ps. 119:105. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

I guess all of this to say "Put your ears on!". Choose to wear the right listening tools for your spiritual ears. We are to cancel the noise and confusion of society and tune into the voice of the Lord. In this way, we know his quiet voice, and his voice that vibrates the atmosphere and universe.

Do not be passive - be active! You are given a gift to be in constant communication with our King and our Lord. Why would you want to ignore the beauty of an invitation to "know the mysteries of the Kingdom of God..". One of his precious promises to us.

  • Luke 8:10. And He said, "To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.

Put your ears on!

(O.K. I am done thinking aloud.)
